THE TRAGEDY OF NOSO (NOT SPEAKING OUT)!

There is a common saying “No man is an Island on his own”. This means that no man should think of being successful at anything, have exceptional skills or be good at what he does without no meaningful help or support from someone or a group of persons. It simply inspires one to seek help, advise, counsel and support when necessary because that is where success strives. It means to speak out, to express your self, to generate a force of assistance.

This help may not necessarily be financial in nature but it could be in the form of encouragement, social support, advise, motivation, counsel or investment. For our mental health to be in check, in the right status and positive, we need to speak out, we need to confide in someone, we need to talk to the right person, we need to express our selves verbally, we need to convey our thought process to the right channel, we need to express how we feel, we need to express our emotions.

It is a dangerous thing to bottle  up your emotions in the times of emotional challenges, mental set backs and trauma. When you keep quiet and refuse to speak out or talk to someone, you become vulnerable to worry, anxiety, depression and at risk of other mental illness.

Everyone on the surface of this earth at different times in their lives have experienced one challenge or the other or a setback. Some have arrived at the junction of confusion not knowing the next direction. The difference between those that stand tall and those that fall flat greatly depends on speaking out! Often we hear of cases where people slump and die instantly. We have cases of persons who rely on hard drugs and diverse kinds of substance and end up dead, in sane or held in rehabilitation centers. It is shocking when we hear how someone who seemed, nice, calm, kind, jovial and held of high esteem with good report all of sudden commits suicide. Nobody would have known that act of suicide would have repeatedly being dominant in the thought process of the individual only for something to finally trigger it. All they would have done was to speak out.

The tragedy of NOSO results in;

1.Confusion

Such person remains in a state of confusion. There will be lack of stamina in thinking straight.

2.Suicidal thoughts and tendencies

Because of the lack of expression of the mental state of the person, he will be prone to suicidal thoughts as he would technically believe that there is no way out.

3.Depression

The person who never speaks out will wallow in continuous depression. Happiness and joy will seem alien to him.

4.Anxiety Disorder and High blood pressure

These are two killers that contribute to other terminal health problems. Anxiety disorder refers to when the person begins to experience increased heart rate or heavy breathing which will lead to feelings of nervousness, panic and fear. High blood pressure which is also know as hypertension is when the blood pressure of the person is considerably higher than normal.

5. Unnecessary Transfer of Aggression

A phenomenon where individuals redirect their anger, frustration, or negative emotions from one source onto another person or situation that is not directly related to the original source of their emotions.

6. Loss of Focus

A person who never speaks out will experience lack of focus at work, school or business. There will be poor concentration in anything he finds himself doing.

7. Loss of spending time with your loved ones

8. Shutting your friends out

9. Replaced Emotions

Such a person’s emotions will be misplaced as he will replace happiness with sadness and joy with sorrow.

10. Making Wrong Decisions

Decision-making is a complex process influenced by various factors, including information, emotions and past experiences, A person who never speaks out will have his emotions triggered in making wrong decisions.

11. Vulnerable to mental illness

Mental illness does not just happen but it is built from constant lack of not taking conscious efforts and practical solution to mental health challenges. Being vulnerable to mental illness means that an individual has characteristics or experiences that increase their risk of developing mental health issues. Mental illness could include; bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorder, personality disorder, e.t.c.

Speak out when you are confused, when you are heartbroken, when you are financially down, when your heart is weighed down by the pressures of life, when he wants a divorce, when she looks down on you. Speak to a someone or a mental health therapist when your mental health is unstable, when you are discouraged, when life turns upside down, when you experience loss of a loved one, when hardship is hard on you, when nothing seems to be working, when the challenges of life push you to lose hope, when you are down and depressed, when you lose that job, when you are down because you lost that contract, when she turns down your proposal, when it seems that the whole world is against you, when you experience any form of trauma.
