The Concept of Emotional Intelligence

 

Emotional Intelligence is the ability as a person to recognize, understand, manage and effectively regulate his emotions and those of others and show empathy. It measures emotional abilities and can be crucial in determining success in work and life.

Anyone who has emotional intelligence possesses its characteristics which include; self-awareness which is the ability to recognize and understand his emotions; self-regulation which involves managing his emotions effectively and ability to control them rather than the opposite; social awareness which is the capacity to recognize and understand the emotions of others by showing empathy and having a deep sense of social responsibility; relationship management which involves using the awareness of your own emotions and those of others to build and maintain healthy relationships.

Emotional intelligence is a powerful tool to deal with anger issues and every day life challenges when effectively used. It helps in building stronger relationships, improved decision making and helps to shape a better mental health.

The good thing about emotional intelligence is that it can be developed and improved over time. Below are some keys to develop emotional intelligence;

Awareness and Emotional Regulation

This can be achieved by regularly taking time to reflect on your emotions, reactions and behavior. Try to understand the reasons for your emotions.

Empathize with People

Practice Empathy. Try to understand other people’s perspectives and emotions and this will help you relate with them better.

Patience is the ability to patiently pay close attention to what others are saying with the sole aim of understanding their words, emotions and intentions.

Healthy relationships amongst people will help boost emotional intelligence. Learn to understand people by seeing the reasons behind why they behave in a certain manner and what causes their emotions to trigger before being judgmental.

Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

Practicing this can help you become more aware of your emotions thereby managing them effectively

Developing Emotional Intelligence takes time and effort but the benefits are worth it. It should never be underestimated when it comes to pursuit of a successful and fulfilling life. While intelligence, skills and qualifications are undoubtedly important, your ability to understand and manage your emotions as well as connect with others on an emotional level can make a significant difference in your personal and professional endeavors.
