ENCOURAGEMENT VITAMINS: THE GUILT TRIP OF FEELING SAD

“Feeling bad for feeling sad causes more distress”.

Rukkayah Abiola, Clinical Psychologist

There is an additional layer of negative emotion that arises from the judgment of one’s own feelings. Adding self-judgment or guilt to the experience of feeling sad can exacerbate emotional distress. Rather than simply experiencing the initial sadness, the added burden of feeling bad about feeling sad contributes to an increased level of emotional discomfort.

The quote highlights the importance of allowing oneself to feel emotions without judgment. It suggests that embracing and acknowledging emotions, including sadness, without self-criticism can lead to a healthier emotional experience. Acceptance of one’s feelings, even when they are difficult, can be a key aspect of emotional well-being.
